The Worldwide Academy of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) conducted an Advisory Mission cum Workshop last Sept. 18-19, 2008 for the benefit of the Intellectual Property Research and Training Institute (IPRTI) and its Fellows and Lecturers. This significant event brought together the expertise of representatives from the WIPO and WIPO Worldwide Academy to strengthen the internal capabilities of the staff of IPRTI and its Fellows and Lecturers in providing services relating to IP education, training and research.

The Institute of Government and Law Reform of the UP Law Center organized a seminar/ workshop entitled “Intellectual Property for Business” last Sept. 23-24, 2008. The audience consists of lawyers, judges, and leaders in the business and government sector. Lecturers from the Intellectual Property Professors and Researchers Organization of the Philippines, Inc. (IPPRO-Phil) explored and discussed the field of intellectual property and its various applications in doing business including the world of the internet.

In response to a national directive for schools to adopt strict policies protecting rights to intellectual property (IP), the University of San Carlos held a seminar on the issue, 1 August 2008, 8:30-4:00 p.m., at the Buttenbruch Hall of the Main Campus. Atty. Andrew Michael Ong, former architecture and law faculty and a noted IP expert, was invited to speak before selected representatives of the colleges and non-teaching units directly affected by the issue.

The University of San Carlos organized a seminar on “Philippine Plant Variety Protection (PVP)” for the university’s Biology Department to guide and educate the students on the current intellectual property policies and laws in protecting plant varieties. The seminar also discussed the rights of breeders over their new plant variety and the procedures and requirements in filing for a PVP application/ certification. The event was held at the Main Campus of University of San Carlos last September 26, 2008.
